June 2024 Newsletter

Hello? Who's calling? [June 2024 Newsletter]

Well, we're just about halfway through the calendar year. We're getting less sunshine each day but we still have plenty of hacking to go around. If you're revving up for budgeting season, make sure there's room for security!

Now, before we get into the updates, a quick look at June 2024:
Good news for some schools and libraries that are getting a cybersecurity boost thanks to the FCC. Even the FCC knows $200M isn't enough, but it's a start. Bad news for Kaspersky as the government banned all sales, updates, and pretty much anything that will allow it to make money in the U.S. The reason? Russia.

On the more technical side, machine learning models have a new threat: the Sleepy Pickle. And Microsoft again makes the newsletter for the dumpster fire that is Recall as well as the less-publicized VSCode discovery. But, hey, admitting it is the first step, right?

In this edition, we focus on:
  1. Can you hear me now?
  2. Another one joins the team
  3. Chef Taliy
As always, thank you for your support, your feedback, and your camaraderie!

Is it your friend calling, or a clever bot that knows just how to say "hello"? In the curious world of audio deepfakes, even voices can wear masks. In a new blog post ahead of his Boardwalk Bytes presentation, Stephen Bondurich sheds light on how artificial intelligence is turning the familiar sound of a voice into a scammer’s best tool.

Get the lowdown on how these digital ventriloquists work and arm yourself with the knowledge to not fall for a high-tech hoax. Remember, not every caller asking for your password is your tech-savvy nephew!
